Aftercare Guide
Congratulations on your new ink from Butterfly Tattoo Studio! Because our specialties—Fine Line and Micro Realism—rely on delicate and precise needlework, proper healing is crucial. Follow this guide carefully to ensure your tattoo stays crisp, vibrant, and beautiful for years to come.
The First 24 Hours
- Leave the wrap on: Your artist has applied a protective wrap (such as Saniderm or cling film). Leave it on for the duration recommended by your artist (usually 2 to 24 hours depending on the wrap type).
- Wash your hands: Before touching your new tattoo, always wash your hands thoroughly with antibacterial soap.
- The First Wash: Remove the wrap gently (under warm running water helps if it's sticky). Wash the tattoo gently using your fingertips, warm water, and a mild, fragrance-free antibacterial soap. Do not use a washcloth or sponge.
- Pat Dry: Gently pat the area dry with a clean paper towel. Do not rub, and do not use a standard bath towel as it may harbor bacteria.
Days 2 - 14: The Healing Process
- Moisturize lightly: Apply a very thin layer of tattoo-specific aftercare ointment or unscented lotion (like Aquaphor or Cetaphil) 2-3 times a day. Less is more; do not drown the tattoo in lotion as it needs to breathe.
- Expect peeling: Around day 3 to 5, your tattoo will start to peel and flake like a mild sunburn. This is normal.
- Do NOT scratch or pick: Your tattoo will itch. Picking at the scabs or peeling skin will pull the ink out and ruin those delicate fine lines. Slap it gently if it itches, or apply a tiny amount of lotion.
What to Avoid (The "Do Nots")
To prevent infection and ink fallout, strictly avoid the following for at least 2-3 weeks:
- No Swimming or Soaking: Avoid pools, the ocean, hot tubs, and baths. Quick showers are fine.
- No Direct Sun Exposure: Do not tan or expose your fresh tattoo to direct Bali sunlight. Once fully healed, always apply high SPF sunscreen to protect the ink from fading.
- No Tight Clothing: Wear loose-fitting clothes over the area to prevent friction.
- No Heavy Sweating: Avoid intense gym workouts that cause excessive sweating around the tattooed area for the first week.
Long-Term Care
Fine line and micro realism tattoos require lifelong care to stay looking their best. Always moisturize daily and apply SPF 50+ sunscreen whenever you are in the sun.
If you experience excessive redness, swelling, or suspect an infection, please consult a doctor immediately and notify the studio.
